There’s a new pharmacy chief executive in town.

Tim Wentworth—the former CEO for Evernorth, Cigna’s health services organization—has been named as the next CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA), executives with the pharmacy retail giant announced on October 10. The appointment takes effect on October 23.

Wentworth, who also led PBM Express Scripts prior to Cigna—from which he retired in 2021—will take over for Ginger Graham, WBA’s lead independent director who’s served as interim CEO since Rosalind Brewer stepped down in late August. He will also join WBA’s board of directors.

The C-suite move comes as Walgreens looks to expand beyond pharmacy and retail and get into the healthcare space. WBA is set to brief investors on its fourth quarter and fiscal 2023 results in a Thursday earnings call.

WBA Executive Chairman Stefano Pessina said in a statement that Wentworth is “an accomplished and respected leader with profound expertise in the payer and pharmacy space as well as supply chain, IT, and human resources.” He added that the new CEO “is the right person to lead WBA’s next phase of growth into a customer-centric healthcare company.”

Wentworth said he looks forward to leading that effort.

“I believe WBA is well positioned to deliver more personalized, coordinated care, and achieve better outcomes at a lower cost,” he said in a statement. “I fully recognize the challenges that health plans, healthcare providers, pharmacies, and retailers are confronting today and am confident that WBA, and its customer- and patient-focused teams, can seize the opportunities of a dynamic marketplace and be the partner of choice.”
